Actually, SMT arrived on the hybrid scene later than the rest. While a fantastic idea for a large group of players, we were concerned with many of the designs being offered to the playing public. It struck us odd, how a club that was meant to replace the hard to hit long irons in the bag, were so often made to resemble the very long irons they were asked to replace. We took our time with the Avocet. We had to make sure that we produced a clubhead that would appeal to a far larger cross section of golfer regardless of their playing abilities, as well as brought a hybrid club to market that would simply perform much better that the rest of the hybrids that were already being offered.
We started off with the flight pattern, spin profile and trajectory we felt we needed to make our mark in this heavily saturated market. Oddly we found our inspiration while watching the graceful flight of the Avocet bird at the beach. Smooth low flight sweeping up only to make a gentle soft landing when the time was right. The name most certainly had to match this graceful creature.
We knew that we wanted a clubhead that would sit confidently and comfortably behind the ball, and knew that a modified wood platform would fit the bill. Reducing the sole drag by removing 60% of the sole and giving the sole a full rocker design, we found that we had a clubhead that fit virtually every lie needed and found its way through every situation that the golfer could find themselves in. When looking for strength, sound, spin profile and feel, we ended up with Maraging Steel and have never looked back.
The Avocet found its way to the Nationwide Tour where it grabbed a 2nd place finish and was immediately recognized for its distance and its value on several occasions during player testing in a major golf magazine. Try an Avocet today and see what we are talking about.
Golf really is an easier game because of clubs like the SMT Avocet.
