The SMT Golf Story

SMT Golf was founded in 2001 by life-long golf enthusiast and entrepreneur Mike Tait. The goal was simple: provide the highest quality golf clubs and components at prices that make golf accessible to everyone. Knowing that no two golfers are alike, SMT Golf set out to offer a broad range of club styles to suit golfers of every level. From the scratch golfer to the 25-handicapper, SMT is determined to provide affordable top-tier equipment to fit your game. However YOU want clubs built and customized, we’ll do it. Or if you want to build the clubs yourself, we can help you with that too. From that vision, we derive our slogan - YOUR GAME, YOUR WAY.

To best understand what drives our love of golf in the present, you first need to know a little bit about our past.

From age 17, SMT Founder Mike Tait has only known one career, and that is golf. Tait began his journey in the golf world as a hired hand at Exmoor Country Club in Highland Park, Illinois. Here he earned his stripes as a promising and gifted club builder, joining the PGA at age 20. After years of working as a PGA Pro at several highly respected golf courses all around the country, Mike noticed a pattern forming with club making -no one could do it right! Whether it be from faulty manufacturing or poor club design, the industry was not producing adequate equipment. There was opportunity and necessity, and with his years of experience and knowledge, that Tait was uniquely situated to satisfy. SMT Golf was born.

It didn’t take long for SMT Golf to begin to make a name in the golf world. With humble beginnings on the RE/MAX World Long Drive Championships, early success had competitors eager to put SMT Golf Drivers in their bag. Six Long Drive Titles later, with Titles in every competitive division, SMT had announced to the industry and consumers alike that these clubs are for real. Over the next 20 years, SMT Golf produced over 300 Long Driver Champions in more than 10 countries. These amazing results led to players on several professional tours ready and willing to give SMT a try. With performance that consistently put some of the longest hitters on the Korn Ferry, European, and PGA Tours at the top of the charts, SMT golf has proven it can compete with any other golf manufacturer in the world.

Having made his mark on the club industry, in 2009 Founder Mike Tait decided SMT should shift focus from industry success to philanthropic endeavors, and created SMT Events & Fundraising Inc. Inspired by the memory of his mother who passed on from lung cancer, Mike set out to give back 100% of the money raised at the events. Since its inception, the company has raised $14 million dollars for multiple charitable causes, always ensuring all funds go to charity.

In 2019 Mike decided to step back from his role as CEO and entrusted the legacy of SMT Golf to his dear friends at Diamond Tour Golf Wholesalers Inc. Knowing the folks at Diamond Tour would be qualified stewards of the original mission of SMT Golf, Mike was at ease taking an emeritus position in order to spend more time with his family. Tait’s work with SMT Golf and moreover, the golf industry as a whole, will always be felt and appreciated. Those of us working currently at SMT know how special the opportunity is to carry Mike’s dream forward.
